Since I first started playing with 3D Kink I've been curious where Kink.com was planning to go with the product. So I got in touch with the company with the usual sort of PR request for answers to a number of my burning questions. These things always take time, but I'm now pleased to be able to say that Marissa, who has been with Kink.com for almost 4 years and been working closely with Kink.com's development team on the 3D Kink project, was able to pull together some answers for me. Thanks, Marissa!

Kink Land question: How much in-house Kink.com customization of 3D Kink can we look forward to? Are there plans to release 3D Kink-exclusive "Sex Packs" featuring new toys (such as paddles or canes) or locations (maybe similar to popular Kink.com sets) or positions or even characters (such as avatars of popular Kink.com models)?
Answer:
Toys
There are two things that can be talked about: toys and apparatus. Toys are dildos and so forth in game, while apparatus are things like the cross, high horse, et cetera.
In the game there is a toy editor that allows users to create their own 3D dildos et cetera. Right now it's a bit limited but users have been making everything from sperm dildos, cell phones, light sabers, to knives.
Locations
Some custom rooms/scenes based on the Armory studio would involve some detailed planning to get measurements of sets in real-life to recreate a set and then get high res photography to use for texture mapping if we want to get very detailed.
Some unique requirements are necessary for how our rooms are laid out so all the models and props can work in the 3D space. For instance we can't have props like a high horse to close to a wall or we can't rotate a camera around the that apparatus effectively. What this means Is that we can recreate a room but its usually a facsimile versus the actual room so we can reuse all setups in our libraries for poses et cetera.
Right now we have 25 rooms and we are adding 5 more in 2010. Another possibility that might be less intensive is to see if any of these rooms are similar enough to current Kink sets that they could have new textures applied to look more like Kink sets than the current default textures.
Custom Models
The challenge with contracting girls for custom models isn't so much for the faces of the models, it is the voice-over which is associated with them if that becomes part of the package. Doing custom models requires a longer term commitment to get a decent ROI on all the advance work required! So far based on our experience to date it takes about 6 weeks of time and effort on our part to make a fully integrated custom model with voice over come to life.
Kink Land question: When it comes to customizing the 3D Kink experience and creating unique kinky art, there are a lot of powerful tools such as the pose editor, the face editor, the toy editor, and so forth. Most of the work done with these tools can be saved locally for future use, but there don't seem to be any tools yet for sharing these saved files with other users, and the file formats are undocumented. Are there any plans to improve these features (or better document the existing ones) so that the fan community can more easily share their custom poses, modified characters, and so forth?
Answer:
As is usual for a product that has grown so rapidly and has so many features, documentation and tutorials are lacking.
A lot of time I say half the fun of the game is figuring out how to make it work! But on a more serious note we are also working an a manual to help users come to grips with how the app works and how to get the most out of it. But that won't be available until 2010 sometime.
Kink Land question: Right now, the game engine that models the characters' arousal in response to the toys doesn't seem to be very kinky, which is puzzling in a Kink.com product. The "pain meter" pegs very quickly when the riding crop or paddle are used, and the arousal indicator drops suddenly and sharply. I've seen feedback from people who were expecting a very different response to the use of erotic pain in 3D Kink, one more in line with the responses of your models and with those of the kinky people in our own lives. Are there any plans to adjust this in future updates?
Answer:
The in-game activities are actually connected to a basic AI (Artificial Intelligence) system and yes we know we are not very tight yet on some of the specific in regards to what transpires. This is for a number of reasons:
1) We have never had the time to go back and tweak this properly and add depth to the AI; and
2) We know that fetish people are very specific and have never had any 'expert' advice on how the programmers should populate the AI to simulate what stimulates.
We would have to have more detail to be able to tweak this as we have endless possibilities and need to narrow it down to something reasonable from a programming perspective. In effect it's a monstrous task to create the stimulus response behavior mechanism used in consensual sex let alone try to mimic the more diverse behaviors associated with fetish sex.
